We have just celebrated Christmas, but here is just a thought, when Gabriel appeared to Zacharias he asked how, and was struck dumb until John was born. Mary asked Gabrielle how, and was answered. My question then is:

When is ok to ask ,”how” and when is it not?

Gabriel appeared to Zacharias and tells him that Elizabeth was going to have a baby, even though they were both old and unable to have children despite years of trying.

And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” Luke 1:18

The result he was struck dumb.

Gabriel then appears to Mary and tells her she is going to have a baby.

Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” Luke 1:34

Gabriel then tells her what is going to happen, the Holy Spirit will over shadow her and she’ll conceive.

Why the difference?

Zacharias questioned the very word of the angel, “How shall I know this? How can I know what God is saying is true.

Mary, on the other-hand asks, “How can this be? She didn’t doubt the word, she sought information as to how the promise would be fulfilled. What’s the point?

It is ok to ask God how He is  going to fulfill His promise, what is not ok is to question the promise. Mary is saying I believe your promise, how are you going to fulfill it. Zacharias heard the angel and asked how can I know this is God,s word, it seems to wonderful.
